Apple iPhone 6 / 6 Plus
Symptoms: Flickering grey bars at the top of the screen, touch becomes intermittent or stops working entirely; worsens over time; screen replacement alone does not fix it.
Fix: Cause: the touch-controller ICs lose contact with the logic board (board flexing). Repair: micro-soldering to reball/replace the touch ICs, or board-level repair; Apple's paid program (2016-2018) replaced displays for a fee.

Symptoms: Phone powers off randomly even with 20-50% charge shown, typically in cold weather or under load; restarts only when connected to a charger.
Fix: Battery cells degraded faster than the fuel gauge expected. Apple ran a free battery replacement program for affected serials (manufactured Sep-Nov 2015); otherwise replace the battery.

Symptoms: Boot loops at the Apple logo, slow boot, greyed-out speakerphone button, voice memos unavailable, no audio in calls; the 'mic' icon is disabled.
Fix: The audio codec IC (U3101) loses connection to the logic board. Software resets do not help; the fix is micro-soldering to reball/replace the audio IC (or a board swap).

Symptoms: Persistent 'No Service' or 'Searching', the phone cannot register on any network even with a working SIM; sometimes follows iOS updates.
Fix: A component on the baseband circuit board fails. Apple's iPhone 7 'No Service' repair program covered eligible devices (manufactured 2016-2018) with free logic-board repair; out-of-program devices need board-level repair.

Symptoms: The display pops out of the frame at the edges, a visible gap or 'spongy' screen, sometimes a bulge near the camera; the device may no longer sit flat.
Fix: Swollen Li-ion cells push the screen out. Stop using/charging the device, do not press the screen back in; replace the battery (and often the adhesive/screen if damaged) and recycle the swollen cell safely.

Symptoms: A thin bright green (or white) vertical line appears on the OLED panel, often after an iOS update, heating event or minor drop; the panel otherwise works.
Fix: Usually a failed display flex/panel bond rather than software: reseat/rebond is rarely lasting, so the practical fix is OLED display replacement. Rule out software first with force-restart and iOS update.

Symptoms: Screen stops responding to touch (fully or in zones) on devices manufactured Nov 2019 - May 2020; no physical damage present.
Fix: Apple's iPhone 11 Display Module Replacement Program replaces the display module free of charge for eligible serial numbers; otherwise the display assembly must be replaced.

Symptoms: Whole screen turns green or shows a green tint, often after an iOS update or while charging; sometimes recovers after reboot, often returns.
Fix: If software triggers are excluded (force restart, iOS update, restore), the green screen on iPhone 12 OLEDs typically indicates display panel/connector failure and needs display replacement.

Symptoms: Screen turns solid pink (often with a reboot loop or frozen UI), mostly reported after iOS updates; device may be otherwise responsive.
Fix: Apple stated most cases were software-related: update iOS, force-restart, or restore via computer. Persistent pink screen after restore suggests display flex/panel damage and requires display replacement.

Symptoms: The rear camera vibrates, buzzes and shows a shaking image when opened in apps like Instagram/TikTok/Snapchat (Sept-Oct 2022); Apple Camera app unaffected.
Fix: The OIS (optical image stabilization) module resonated due to an app-API interaction. Apple fixed it in iOS 16.0.2; cameras already mechanically damaged by the oscillation needed rear-camera replacement.

Symptoms: Device becomes uncomfortably hot during setup, charging, gaming or video calls in the first weeks after release (iOS 17.0); sometimes throttling.
Fix: Apple attributed it to an iOS 17 software bug plus background indexing after setup; iOS 17.0.3 fixed most cases. Persistent heat points to charging accessories, heavy use while charging, or (rarely) battery faults.

Symptoms: Fast battery drain on a device that is now many years old; sudden shutdowns under load; in worse cases the back glass lifts as the cell swells.
Fix: Software tweaks (sleeping apps, updates) help marginal drain, but a 3000 mAh cell from 2016 that drains fast or swells needs replacement; a swollen cell is a safety hazard - replace and recycle it.
Documented sourceSamsung Galaxy S8/S9/Note/S20+ (OLED)
Symptoms: A bright green vertical line appears on AMOLED displays (S8, S9, Note 9/10/20, S20/S21 families), famously often right after software updates or overheating; hardware-level, persistent.
Fix: The line is caused by display flex/panel bonding failure; no software fix exists. Samsung replaced affected screens free of charge in several markets via service campaigns; otherwise display replacement is required.

Symptoms: Rear camera hunts focus, produces blurry photos or fails to focus on close subjects, especially on S20 Ultra; can appear after updates.
Fix: Clear camera cache, remove cases/magnets near the module, update firmware; persistent autofocus failure on S20-series is a known hardware fault of the focus actuator and requires rear camera module replacement.

Symptoms: Flickering, green tint, dim patches or lines on the S21 FE display, frequently reported after One UI/Android updates; sometimes only at low brightness.
Fix: Try software steps first (update, safe mode, factory reset). Persistent lines/tint on this AMOLED point to panel failure; check Samsung service campaigns in your market, otherwise replace the display.

Symptoms: Devices overheated, smoked or caught fire while charging or in use (2016); some replacement units also ignited.
Fix: Root cause: design defects in two battery generations (electrode compression / welding burrs) short-circuited the cells. Samsung recalled ~3 million units, discontinued the model and issued refunds/exchanges - the only 'repair' was replacement.

Symptoms: Hinge creak/looseness, dust ingress near the crease, inner flexible OLED developing bubbles, lines or dead zones along the crease after heavy folding.
Fix: Foldables need careful handling: keep debris out of the hinge, avoid pressure on the crease. Inner screen or hinge failure requires specialist foldable repair - iFixit teardowns rate these repairs difficult and the inner display is the usual replacement.

Symptoms: Phone charges intermittently or only at a specific cable angle; 'moisture detected' warnings; slow charging - very common on pocketed devices.
Fix: First fix: clean compacted pocket lint out of the USB-C port with a non-conductive pick and compressed air (no metal tools). If pins are corroded or the port is loose after cleaning, replace the charging port/board.

Symptoms: Loudspeaker crackles, rattles or distorts at medium/high volume; earpiece may sound muffled; common after water exposure, drops or simply age.
Fix: Rule out software (volume tests, safe mode, cache wipe). Debris or a torn speaker membrane needs the loudspeaker module replaced; water-damaged devices may also need mesh/port cleaning.
Documented sourceGoogle Pixel 2 XL
Symptoms: Ghost images (nav bar, keyboard, status icons) permanently visible on the pOLED display; reported within weeks of launch (2017) and worsening over time.
Fix: Google extended the warranty to 2 years and replaced affected displays; mitigation included dimming nav-bar elements. On a used device the only cure is display replacement.

Symptoms: Fast idle drain and overnight battery loss, sometimes accompanied by warmth; a recurring complaint across Pixel 3 firmware versions.
Fix: Google's own guidance: check battery-drain culprits in Settings, restrict unused apps, update firmware. Persistent heavy drain on an ageing 2,915 mAh cell is solved by battery replacement.

Symptoms: After the August 2025 update some Pixel 4a units lost capacity/performance; Google then shipped an update reducing battery capacity on all units as a safety measure.
Fix: Google's Pixel 4a Battery Performance Program offered affected users a free battery replacement, cash payout or credit (varied by market) after the capacity-limiting update; check eligibility by serial/IMEI on Google support.
Documented sourceGoogle Pixel 6 / 6 Pro
Symptoms: Dropped calls, weak or lost mobile data, 'SOS only', especially on the Exynos/Samsung modem-equipped Pixel 6 generation; complaints persisted across updates.
Fix: Google's support path: reset network settings, update firmware, re-provision SIM/eSIM. Many cases were modem firmware bugs improved over time; persistent radio failure is a logic-board fault (not user-serviceable).

Symptoms: Fingerprint unlock fails often, needs multiple attempts, worse with screen protectors; a chronic complaint on Pixel 6 and later ultrasonic/optical sensors.
Fix: Google's guidance: re-register prints (multiple angles), remove thick/tempered protectors, keep the sensor area clean, update software. Hardware sensor failure is rare but possible and needs display/sensor service.

Symptoms: Green vertical lines on Pixel 8/8 Pro AMOLED panels, often appearing without impact; similar failures reported on Pixel 7/8 series in 2024-2025.
Fix: A panel-level fault: software steps only rule out glitches. Affected users report Google replacing displays under warranty/out-of-warranty goodwill for this known issue; otherwise display replacement is required.

Symptoms: Noticeably faster drain and warmth after OxygenOS updates or on ageing cells; standby drain complaints recur in the OnePlus community.
Fix: Community/OxygenOS guidance: let the phone re-optimize after updates, check battery-usage stats, disable rogue apps. Consistent heavy drain on a 2-3 year old cell is fixed by battery replacement.

Symptoms: Recurring failure patterns: OLED display damage after drops (curved panel), worn USB-C charging ports, earpiece/speaker fatigue and battery ageing on a 2019 flagship.
Fix: iFixit device wiki + teardowns document replacements: display assembly, charging port/board, loudspeaker and battery are all replaceable; curved OLED makes screen swaps the expensive one.
Documented sourceXiaomi Redmi Note (series)
Symptoms: Loose USB-C connector, charging only at an angle, slow or no charging; very common on budget devices with heavy daily charge cycles.
Fix: Clean the port first (lint compaction mimics port failure). If pins are worn or the sub-board is damaged, replace the charging port / sub-board - a cheap, well-documented repair on Redmi Note models.
Documented sourceXiaomi / Redmi / POCO
Symptoms: Device heats up during charging, gaming or camera use; some Snapdragon 8-series models run hot by design; persistent heat throttles performance.
Fix: Xiaomi's own FAQ: remove the case while charging, avoid use while fast-charging, close background apps, keep software updated. Chronic overheating with fast drain points to battery or charging-circuit faults needing service.

Symptoms: Back glass or screen lifting, device no longer flat, spongy panel, sudden shutdowns, sometimes heat or a sweet chemical smell - a failing Li-ion cell generating gas.
Fix: Stop charging immediately, power off, keep away from heat/flammables, do not squeeze or puncture. Replace the battery through a professional service and recycle the swollen cell at a battery-collection point (never bin it).
